PTS Rec. Leader I - Summer Program, Community Centers

The City of Santa Clarita has a part-time/seasonal (PTS) position available in Recreation and Community Services Division. Under the leadership of the Community Services Coordinator, this position will work directly with the Summer Program. The Summer Program provides youth and teens ages 5 to 17 with organized games, arts and crafts, outings, and sports and water activities. This position may work up to 40 hours per week from May 24 – August 13 and is based on the needs of the program; Monday – Friday from 7:00 a.m.– 7:00 p.m. The program will have ‘pods’ with up to fourteen youth/teens and two PTS Recreation Leaders per pod.

The program was developed with the guidance from the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health to provide educational and recreational opportunities for youth.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES:
• Organizes, plans, and works directly with the Community Services Coordinator, Program Specialist, and other Recreation Leaders to implement the Summer Program and prepare activities for youth and teens
• Supervises and leads youth and teens in activities such as arts & crafts, games, sports, water activities, and outings
• Assists with decorating bulletin boards
• Maintains staff/youth and staff/teen safety ratio
• Assists in organization, set-up, and clean-up of facility
• Organizes, prioritizes, and follows-up on assignments
• Greets patrons and participants and answers inquiries regarding programs
• Effectively addresses issues and concerns with youth and teens as they arise
• Maintains various forms, logs, and reports
• Attends meetings and training sessions
• Follows and enforces City policies as they relate to the health, behavior, and safety of others
• Performs first aid and responds to emergencies; reports incidents and accidents
• Adheres to Los Angeles Department of Public Health guidelines set forth
• Other duties, as directed by Community Services Supervisor, Coordinator, and/or Recreation Leader III/II

Education and Experience

• High school diploma or GED equivalent
• Six-months of paid experience in leading and planning activities for youth and teens in a recreation, education, child care program, after-school program, camps, or other relatable setting
• Completion of college courses is highly desirable
• Bilingual in English/Spanish highly desirable
• Possession of, or ability to obtain by May 24, 2021, Adult and Pediatric CPR/AED/First Aid. A Red Cross CPR/AED/FA course will be offered by the City and staff may elect to participate in this training (unpaid) at a cost of $21 for the certification.

• Ability to organize and prioritize a variety of tasks in an effective and timely manner, for self and others
• Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions, including inclement weather
• Ability to work flexible hours, including nights
• Ability to lift, drag, and push files, paper, and equipment weighing 25 pounds or more is required occasionally

Final candidates for the position of Recreation Leader will require a negative TB test result within the last two years to be cleared to work. This clearance must be completed prior to the first day of work on May 18, 2021. It is important to note that current CDC guidelines do not allow for a TB test to be given within 28 days of receiving the first or second dose of a Covid-19 vaccine. Final candidates that are unable to provide a negative TB test result and clear the background process by May 18, 2021 may not be eligible to work the summer program.

PTS workers are at-will. Generally, PTS employees are limited to no more than 1,000 hours.
