Fall 2021 Fellowship - Disability and Inclusion (Guyer Fellowship)

Summary
Save the Children recognizes that hiring staff with disabilities is the most effective way to change behavior, attitudes and knowledge within our organization, and will enable Save the Children to be a leader in disability inclusion. Our employee affinity group DAWN – Disability and Wellness Network – has been proactively working with stakeholders to ensure Save the Children is a disability confident workplace – one where disability inclusion an integral part of our diversity, equity and inclusion commitment, policies, and practices, and where disability and wellness is discussed openly, frequently and respectfully in the workplace.

The Fellow will support DAWN in raising awareness about priority initiatives such as the Agency’s disability inclusion strategy, how to offer reasonable accommodations, and the importance of disability positive language and images throughout materials, media, website and workplace of Save the Children.

What You’ll be Doing (Essential Duties, Responsibilities and Impact)
With direction from DAWN’s co-chairs and members:
  • Identify and collate resources to enhance planned training for managers on disability inclusion in the workplace – written materials, webinars, speakers – specifically focusing on non-managers
  • Engage with DAWN and the global Disability Inclusion Working Group, making recommendations on how to bring workplace culture and programming work for disability inclusion closer together
  • Coordinate DAWN’s efforts to organize a week of activities and all-staff meeting in commemoration of International Day of People with Disabilities (Dec 3) – identify and secure external speakers, plan engagement events, etc.
  • Develop plan for future webinars and communications, utilizing existing expertise across Save the Children, to support further disability and inclusion efforts

Required Qualifications
  • Demonstrated interest and/or experience in disability inclusion in the workplace or a tertiary educational setting
  • Must be an actively enrolled undergraduate, graduate or post-graduate student or have graduated within 6 months of start date. Possess strong written skills, solid interpersonal skills and ability to work within a team

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office
  • Currently eligible to work in the U.S.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with event organizing, particularly around International Day of People with Disabilities
  • Familiarity/experience using adaptive or assistive technology for people with disabilities
  • Language skills in American Sign Language or Braille.
  • Experience working with a Disabled People’s Organization
