Laboratory Analyst (Environmental Health Manager II)

This position is in the Bureau of Environmental Health Services, Inorganic Chemistry Laboratory.

  • Receives laboratory samples, resolves any inconsistencies between the samples and the paperwork. 
  • Distributes samples to various labs. 
  • Documents the receipts of samples on the chain of custody (COC) sample request forms. 
  • Enters COC information and both enters and verifies analytical data into the Laboratory Information Management System.
  • Prepares and ships sample containers to meet the needs of various program areas.
  • Analyzes samples for pH, alkalinity, color, residual chlorine, conductivity and turbidity.
  • Analyze wastewater and ambient water samples for BOD. Analyze TSS, TDS and TS. 
  • Enter results and associated quality control data daily according to the standard.
  • Analyzes samples for oil and grease, cyanide and phenol. Enter results and associated quality control data daily according to the standard.
  • Digests drinking and non-drinking water samples for metals analysis according to approved standards.
  • Ensures safe work practices by attending all safety meetings, annual review of the safety manual and participation in the annual chemical inventory and adherence to the safety policies as prescribed by the Hayne Building Safety Manual and the agency. 
  • Review the DHEC Standard Operating Procedure and it's referenced methods annually, updating as needed.
  • Complete all necessary administrative tasks (PCAS, SCIES related functions, etc.) and documentation as required and requested. 
  • Complete all other tasks as directed by supervisor.

Minimum and Additional Requirements
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • A high school diploma and experience in environmental health programs or radiological health. 
  • A bachelor's degree in the natural or physical sciences, mathematics, public health, engineering or a related technical field may be substituted for the required work experience.
  • The ability to perform scientific calculations and perform highly complex tasks and maintain accurate records.
  • The successful candidate will be required to work with and/or be exposed to commonly used laboratory chemicals daily.
  • Knowledge, understanding and experience in a general laboratory setting, including making standards, acid digestions, and distillations.
  • For the safety of the employee, the safety of others and to comply with OSHA regulations, this position required the ability to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) to include, but not limited to, boots, safety glasses, laboratory coats, and gloves.
Applicants must be able to complete the following duties with or without a reasonable accommodation:
  •  Move and change 150-pound gas cylinders using a hand truck.
  •  Stand for long periods of time.
  •  Identify precise gradient changes between colors.

Preferred Qualifications
  • A master's degree in the natural or physical sciences or related technical field;
  • A bachelor’s degree in the natural or physical sciences or related technical field; and one (1) year of environmental health or related experience.
  •  OR an associate degree in the natural or physical sciences or related technical field and three (3) years of environmental experience; 
  • OR high school diploma and four (4) years of environmental experience. 
Institutions of higher learning must be recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation.
  • Preference given to applicants with experience with of general instrumentation software, LIMS, and Excel.
