Graphic Design Assistant

Salary Range:                     $41,700 - $47,967 

JOB SUMMARY:

This newly created position is an integral part of the Marketing and Communications Department, which produces hundreds of rider, stakeholder, and employee communication projects every year. Projects include creating everything from signage to bus schedules (timetables) to social media graphics. We are looking for a team player who is a self-starter, organized and eager to learn.  In this position, you will be expected to meet deadlines and use the Marketing Helpdesk software to track projects.  

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Track and communicate marketing project status with the marketing team and with other departments such as Transportation, Human Resources, Service Development using the Marketing Helpdesk software. 
  2. Assist Graphic Design Coordinator to produce signage and other print materials. This includes using and overseeing machinery such as the printer, laminator, binder, drill press and guillotine cutter to create projects such as internal forms, handbooks and temporary signs. The Graphic Design Assistant will also utilize the Gerber printer and cutter to assist with the creation of bus stop signage and long-term and special service detour signage.  
  3. Communicate with external printer and MCTS staff on the quantity and cost of timetables each quarter. Maintain a spreadsheet with prices and quantities used to order timetables. Enter work orders in procurement system. Fulfill requests from locations that display our public timetables. Mail, make ready or drop off timetables as requested by community partners, which may require travel to external locations. Requests quotes from printers for projects not printed in-house. 
  4. Assist the Graphic Design Coordinator with layout, typography, internal communications graphics, social media graphics, and photography revisions. This includes creating or editing designs in Illustrator and Adobe Acrobat. Utilize Google Maps and Remix (transit planning software) to create route maps for social and web use. 
  5. Proofread rider communications such as Bus Lines, Rider Insider, and Timetables. 
  6. Maintain publication subscriptions, order supplies for the Marketing Department. Also maintains inventory of printing supplies and places orders in anticipation of future use and large printing runs. 
  7. Process bus requests for travel training, PR events, parades, and other needs.  
  8. Assist in the resolution of problems and provide responses to customer inquiries related to the Marketing products and programs.  
  9. Participate in departmental meetings and brainstorming sessions.  
  10. Perform other duties as assigned.  

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Valid Wisconsin Driver's License.
  2. High School diploma or GED.
  3. Graphic design coursework a plus.
  4. Associate’s degree in related field preferred.
  5. Excellent work and attendance record.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  1. Familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite, including Illustrator, Photoshop and InDesign, and other graphic design applications. 
  2. Ability to work in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Outlook, Word and PowerPoint). 
  3.  Knowledge of printing and document creation process. 
  4. Attention to detail. 
  5. Time management and organization skills.  
  6. Ability to learn and utilize other software programs of the Marketing Department. 
  7. Excellent customer service and communication skills.  
  8. Excellent organizational, problem-solving and decision-making skills. Ability to multi-task and meet deadlines. 
  9. Ability to work with minimal direction and supervision.  
  10. Maintain regular and acceptable attendance as determined by MTS.  

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS:

  1. Must be comfortable using sign making equipment such as an Exacto knife, guillotine cutter and drill press. Work is frequently conducted in an office, shop or warehouse environment with moving mechanical parts.
  2. Must have good finger and manual dexterity. 
  3. Must be able to manipulate objects with the hands. 
  4. Must have the ability to provide both oral and written communications requiring good verbal expression, satisfactory hearing and eyesight clarity sufficient to read. 
  5. Licensed and physically able to drive an automobile. 
  6. Ability to stand to perform printing assignments, and lift boxes and bags weighing at least 20 pounds.
