Casual Seasonal EMS Physician

Summary Statement

The Associate EMS Medical Director for Sussex County will oversee SCEMS as the jurisdictional ALS agency, focusing on education, quality improvement, and case reviews. Key responsibilities include providing medical oversight and quality control for advanced and basic life support, as well as emergency medical dispatch; establishing compliance with standing orders and treatment protocols; reviewing medical interventions by EMS providers and coordinating with the Office of EMS and State Fire Prevention Commission to address deficiencies; monitoring provider skills and recommending remedies to ensure effective care; offering technical assistance to EMS providers and supporting patient care; and exercising authority to suspend EMS providers for up to 30 days if public health is at risk.

The Medical Director will collaborate with Basic Life Support Providers and Emergency Dispatch, attend monthly statewide meetings, and participate in statewide initiatives to enhance EMS projects and standing orders. Additionally, the role involves working with EMS agencies and hospitals to improve quality of care and ensure seamless transitions from prehospital evaluation to emergency department treatment.

  • Performs physical examinations, assesses condition, makes diagnoses and makes recommendations and referrals.
  • Prescribes treatment through standing orders, monitors patient's care and outcomes and adapts treatments as part of the Quality Improvement process.
  • May perform critical interventions and in the prehospital setting including surgical procedures in emergency situations.
  • Takes part in conferences concerning cases; recommends future treatment or action; counsels' individual providers as part of the educational and Quality Improvement process.
  • Instructs BLS providers and paramedics in specific treatments.
  • Develops and administers comprehensive plans to ensure the most positive prognosis available.
  • Provide follow-up information on patient outcomes to involved EMS providers and agencies as part of the Quality Improvement process.

Job Requirements

JOB REQUIREMENTS for Physician
Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:

  1. Possession of a Delaware Physician M.D. or Delaware Physician D.O. license or eligibility for a Delaware license.
  2. Six months experience in practicing medicine in a hospital, clinic or private practice.
