Qualifications

Education Requirements, Consumer Safety Officer, series 0696:
Degree: The education must have been obtained at a college, university, or an accrediting body recognized by the Secretary, U.S. Department of Education (external link) at the time the degree was obtained.
Applicants must meet one of the following requirements.
A. A bachelor’s or graduate/higher level degree in quality assurance or a related degree that included at least 30 semester hours in one or a combination of the following: consumer laws, biological sciences, food science, chemistry, pharmacy, physical sciences, food technology, nutrition, medical science, engineering, epidemiology, veterinary medical science, legal investigations, law enforcement, or related scientific fields that provided knowledge directly related to consumer safety officer work.

The 30 semester hours may include up to 8 semester hours in statistics, or course work that included the principles, theory, or practical application of computers or computer programming.
OR
B. Combination of education and experience--courses consisting of at least 30 semester hours in the fields of study described in paragraph A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
Desired Skills and Experience:
• Experience in animal food regulatory compliance or regulatory standards at FDA or another regulatory federal agency, and an understanding of the laws and regulations pertinent to FDA.
• Experience with planning, managing, and directing the development of policies, regulations, guidance and enforcement strategies related to compliance actions, post approval monitoring, and animal food safety.
• Demonstrated leadership skills in championing values that includes but not limited to honesty and integrity, creativity and innovation, commitment and accountability, delegation, and empowerment.
• Demonstrated skill in organizing time effectively, determining priorities, and moving work forward effectively and efficiently.
• Communicator who can drive collaboration and teamwork, empower individuals, and is committed to CVM/FDA’s Public Health mission of protecting human and animal health; and has skill in written and verbal communications to prepare written documents and findings and to present finding and conduct briefings.

• Demonstrated skill in identifying and analyzing problems; generating alternative solutions and make recommendations.
• Experience providing advice on policies regulation, compliance and enforcement strategies related to post approval monitoring, and animal food safety.
