Position Overview
This position is responsible for assisting with the operation and direct supervision of a highly specialized steel fabrication and construction crew (Unit G) assigned to make complex repairs, often emergency in nature, to highway structures and related facilities throughout the state of Illinois.

Essential Functions
- Instructs and supervises a specialized steel construction crew in the repair and reconstruction of projects consisting of structural members in highway structures, including larger river structural truss spans (often requiring working at heights up to 80' over the river/ground) and other specialized repair which is too complex to be performed by a highway maintenance force.
- Supervises the fabrication crew in the shop to prepare all needed materials for assigned repair projects as well as all necessary fabrication for the ten Unit B, D, and F crews.
- Interprets detailed blueprints and steel fabrication plans to construct steel structural members, false work and special jacking and cribbing members necessary to make repairs in accordance with assigned projects.
- Assists with hiring prevailing wage crafters through appropriate union officials in strict accordance with departmental policies. Interprets union crafters work rules and regulations for control and compliance.
- Calculates and measures final quantities of pay items to compute final costs of projects.
- Prepares daily reports for timekeeping, work progress, commodity items, labor and material distribution.
- Keeps abreast of all technological advances in both fabrication/erection of structural steel and bridge repair methods and materials.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Completion of two years of college in civil engineering technology, pre-engineering or a job related technical/science curriculum PLUS five years of engineering experience; OR Seven years of engineering experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bridge construction or repair experience.
- Experience with structural steel fabrication.
- Supervisory experience.

- Occasional statewide travel with overnight stays.
- Ability and willingness to work at and directly supervise work performed at excessive heights (often up to 80') above water/ground level.
