Biological Science Technician (Wildlife)
These positions are located within the Division of Natural Resource Management at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore.
The main duties of this position will include recognizing and documenting piping plover breeding behaviors; identifying piping plover nest scrapes, locating piping plover nest sites, and implanting protective management actions; assisting with the Integrated Pest Management program; collecting field data and recording the data into established or new databases; and collecting GPS and GIS data in the field.
- You may serve on a field crew responsible for monitoring a variety of wildlife species and their habitats, including piping plovers; conducting surveys for various mammalian species including black bear activity; installing and tending to acoustic monitoring equipment in remote field locations (frog and/or bat monitoring); monitoring campgrounds for problem bear and/or other wildlife monitoring.
GS-06: You will assist a GS-7 crew lead with directing the field crew. Successful applicants will serve on teams that may include permanent and seasonal NPS staff, interns, volunteers, and staff from other agencies. You may be asked to occasionally lead volunteers in selected projects or work independently. Leading a crew of volunteers, making educational contacts with visitors, and assisting with other natural resource program areas as needed, under the direction of a field crew supervisor.
GS-07: You will serve as a program lead to implement new and established natural resource management projects involving integrated pest management (IPM), piping plover protection, and BARK Ranger volunteers, with an emphasis on visitor education. Duties will include training and coordinating volunteers; identification of a variety of shorebirds and mammals; collecting field data, recording field data in established or new databases; implementing prevention and control strategies to manage pest species; providing outreach/education content for social media posts; coordinating outreach and media contacts; and administrative tasks.
GS-06/07: A portion of time will be dedicated to project logistics and preparatory groundwork, equipment acquisition/maintenance, data entry, preparation of Field and Project Reports, and conducting administrative tasks in an office setting.

- Salary
$19.33 - $23.94 per hour
Pay per hour will vary based on grade level. GS-05: $18.96; GS-06: $21.14; and GS-07: $23.49
