Recreation Specialist I - Recreation Programmer

RECREATION SPECIALIST I/ RECREATION PROGRAMMER duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Recreation Programming

·     Plan, coordinate, implement, supervise, and evaluate drop-in recreation programs for pre-school, youth, teens, adult and seniors in a multi-use recreation center.

·     Plan and coordinate recreation programs in the areas that may include youth and adult game room, weight room, gymnasium, seniors, birthday parties, drop-in childcare, recreation classes, special events and sports & specialty camps.

Supervision

·     Directly supervise recreation part-time staff and volunteers

·     Includes hiring, training, scheduling, discipline, coaching and performance evaluation.

Facility Operations

·     Assist with oversight of the daily recreation center operations including opening and closing the facility, program area supervision, handling building maintenance items, custodial staff and patron issues.

·     Provide and maintain a safe environment.

·     Work with departmental programming units and community groups for facility scheduling.

·     Prepare statistical data for budgetary and programming purposes.

·      Enforce center and City policies and procedures.

·      Provide quality customer service while responding to inquiries from the public.

·      Recommend action to address inappropriate patron behavior.

·     Set-up and break-down facility rooms as needed

·     Provide facility tours

Perform other job duties requiring skills, knowledge and physical requirements as demanded by those duties described or less. Individual assignments will be determined by the supervisor based on the current workloads and department needs.

MINIMUMS: Requires a Bachelors degree in recreation management, therapeutic recreation, exercise science, or a related field; OR any combination of education (above the high school level) and/or experience equivalent to four (4) years in fields utilizing the required knowledge, skills, and abilities and associated with such positions as recreation leader or recreation program supervisor. This position is being advertised as a pool, and applications will be used to fill current vacancies and any other similar Recreation Specialist I positions that become available within six {6) months from the closing date of this posting.

This is an Alpha I position, which requires reporting to work during periods of emergency or inclement weather, regardless of the City's operational status.

Requires a current and valid Driver’s license in accordance with Virginia or North Carolina DMV driver’s license eligibility requirements.

The work schedule associated with the position you are applying for varies to facilitate center operations and programming for pre-school, youth and adults. The typical schedule will include morning shifts of 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., mid-shifts of 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. & 10:00 a.m. - 6:30 p.m., evening shifts of 12:45 p.m. to 9:15 p.m., and working weekend shifts of Saturday 8:45 a.m. to 5:15 p.m. and Sunday 8:45 a.m. to 5:15 p.m. Holiday schedule will be from 8:45 a.m. - 5:15 p.m.

Work locations and placement may change based on operational needs.

As a condition of employment, all employees must attend P&R Connection (Department Orientation). If selected for the position, you will be provided an approximate training date at the time of hire. Training is held from 8:30am-5:00pm, every other Friday, at the Parks & Recreation Administration Building. When an exemption is permittable, a hybrid version of the training is available, but will require training attendance on a weekend.
