Transportation Aide
May - October 2018 • Sterling Heights, MI
What I liked
I liked that working at the C & T lab because it gave me opportunities to work in the office and also get actual field experience collecting samples of aggregates and performing soil borings. I also received training that could prove relevant in any other jobs I may have in the near future. I also learned a lot about the testing process that goes into construction.
What I wish was different
I wish the summer months had been a little busier. Since it was kind of a slow summer, there were a lot of days (especially in May) that I had absolutely nothing to do for eight hours, but there's nothing anyone could really have done about that.
Advice
If you need something to do at work, don't be afraid to ask. Almost everybody, at least at my office, has work they would be happy to receive help with. By doing this, you'll create good relationships which can be helpful in terms of having references for future jobs, and you'll also learn things you would not have learned had you just sat around and waited for the day to pass by.

Student Assistant
May - August 2017 • Lansing, MI
What I liked
I liked the mix of field and office work, and the opportunity to make differences and take initiatives. I was credited by the department for introducing new methodology and procedures for billboard and junkyard inspection, which greatly made me feel accomplished for what I did.
What I wish was different
Better travel options. For road crews, the base of operations was out in Charlotte and it was difficult to reach without a car, before I spent most time at the Lansing office I had to carpool there.
Advice
Make sure you have adequate transportation and make sure to apply for a credit card. You're reimbursed for travel and expenses, but it's good to have for incidentals and emergencies.
